The Trappist mystic, Thomas Merton, wrote that “art enables us to lose ourselves and find ourselves at the same time.” At the core of my artistic practice is drawing. The ability to express oneself through line is liberation for the artist. My drawings embrace physicality, gesture and mark making. I am interested in exploring how to bring the principles of drawing out of the sketch book. I have experimented with using steel rod and wire to create three dimensional line drawings in space. Investigating the principles of line has led me to celebrate the intersection of art and technology. I incorporate CNC machines, laser cutters, computer software like Illustrator, SketchUp, Photoshop, and other technologies into my practice. This interdisciplinary approach to art making frees me to explore my identity – my humor, passion, history and experiences. Playing with time, space and memory in my drawings, I consider elements of identity, including class, labor, religion, family history and relationships. My work is the physical record of my process of losing and finding myself over and over again.
