I’m drawn to the physical experience of making photographs; the relationships, time and location in which the images were made, as well as the materials and processes used to create the image objects themselves. For the past 10 years I’ve worked with the historic photographic process of wet plate collodion on metal and glass, as traditional film becomes less available. I apply an experimental and personal approach to this historical method that explores memory and possibility through chemical and metaphoric change. In a city that is in a constant state of transformation, the present is almost as unreliable as the future. Photography has been my way of moving through these changes, documenting the residents and the discarded material culture that eventually disappear from San Francisco neighborhoods as they transition at an ever-rapid pace—allegories of a neighborhood told through tangible ephemera, portraits and stories. Through my work I ask how we make space for one another, where we place value, and what we hold onto.
