Hazardous Waste

Household hazardous waste cannot be disposed of in the trash. It is illegal to put items such as pesticides, and other chemicals in any of your carts. Something is hazardous if it can catch fire, react, or explode when mixed with other substances or if it is toxic.

Recology Auburn Placer does not accept household hazardous waste other than sharps and paint. For information on the disposal of hazardous waste, please contact Western Placer Waste Management Authority at 916.645.5230, extension #4.

Medications

When medications are disposed of in the trash or down the drain, they can find their way into our waterways and negatively impact frogs, fish, and other aquatic life. Please drop them off at the locations below for safe disposal.

Drop off
Drop off medications for safe handling at select police stations, Walgreens, and pharmacies. They can also be taken to the Western Placer Waste Management Authority.

Paint

Drop Off
Recology Auburn Placer partners with PaintCare to offer take-back programs at no charge. Customers may drop off paint items at the Auburn Transfer Station for safe disposal.  You may also drop off paint at the Western Placer Waste Management Authority or find a take-back location with PaintCare.

Sharps

Sharps or needles that are improperly disposed of in the trash or recycling can pose a health hazard to our garbage collectors and our environment. All sharps waste must be transported to a collection center in an approved sharps container. Home-generated sharps waste includes hypodermic needles, syringes, and lancets that are used for medical purposes.

Drop Off
Sharps in approved biohazard containers can be brought to the Recology Auburn Placer Transfer Station for safe disposal.

Visit the Placer-Nevada Rx Drug Safety Coalition for additional free year-round medical drop-off sites.
